The Docent (still under construction)
Big Basin State Park, Boulder Creek, California
Home to Sequoia Sempervirens (always living) also referred to as the Coastal Redwoods. These are the tallest and some of the oldest living things on the planet. The tallest tree is Hyperion in the Mendocino area being 379.1 feet tall. A newly discovered tree in Big Basin is 318 feet tall. The other two types of sequoia trees are the Gigantea in the Sierra Nevada and the Dawn Redwood in a small area of China. The Gigantea are the largest in girth and the Dawn Redwoods are a deciduous variety.
Docent field trip to Ano Nuevo yesterday with a stop afterward at Quiroste Cultural Preserve, a newly discovered Native People archeological site. A massive grass-faced butte towers right above it and this huge old-growth redwood holds court with its partner on the edge of the forest below. The place is saturated with a tangible Presence.
